Next-generation financial Cloud systems must meet the automation, operational pacing, and rapid-market-change demands of the digital economy, which cannot be supported by traditional automation paradigms. Intelligent automation, which employs appropriate AI technologies for different automation decision categories and business processes, is a concept with unprecedented potential. Seen as an enabler for next-generation financial Cloud systems, three critical aspects need serious consideration to seize this opportunity: the intelligent automation of internal operations, the governance and compliance of intelligent automation at a system level, and how companies can incrementally build intelligent automation capabilities. The first two aspects interact because the business case for intelligent automation is built on stakeholder demand for cost reduction. Filling gaps in these two areas provides a foundation for a roadmap of maturity phases or increments. Primary examples of intelligent automation in financial operations research illustrate its industrial relevance.
