Cloud-scale clinical intelligence refers to the collaborative, adaptable use of clinical data and analytics through cloud-based services to support healthcare operations — the many activities healthcare organisations undertake to ensure the smooth delivery and management of clinical services. Adaptive healthcare operations are those capable of responding to real-world events and changing conditions in a timely manner. Cloud-scale clinical intelligence supports this adaptability by delivering real-time notifications and alerts for key operational tasks, and by scoring resources, patients, and treatments to identify optimal use of limited supply and enable timely clinical decision-making. These capabilities address the growing scarcity of resources across many healthcare systems, improving patient flow and optimising the use of costly, limited assets.
This work defines and maps real-time patient flow and treatment workflows to the data sources and clinical services that implement them, including hospital information systems, laboratory information systems, picture archiving and communication systems, radiology information systems, emergency department information systems, and monitoring systems. Latency requirements are derived from these real-time workflows, along with the factors affecting the feasibility of meeting them. The emphasis throughout is on enabling real-time notifications and alerts without disrupting existing clinical practice or the current electronic health record, lab information, and picture archiving and communication systems.
